I had recently just passed my van driving test, not the automatic driv

I had recently just passed my van driving test, not the automatic driving lessons, the full manual gear lessons, so that I could drive any type of van without being given an instruction from someone else in the van. It also meant that my insurance would be lower, and that I wouldn't need to lug round a friend every time my missus wanted something from the shops.
My first instruction, just after I clocked on at work, was to deliver some insurance papers to a nearby company. It was 7am, early morning on a hot, summers Monday. So, yeah, I wasn't exactly in a "tip top" mood.
My breakfast wasn't exactly brilliant either. A simple, gooey egg with a few bits of toast cooked up by Betty in the garage cafeteria. Betty was a brilliant woman though, even if her cooking wasn't. I suppose it got me through the morning, though.
I was on the road about half an hour later. I'm sure the company had lied to me, they said "nearby" company. Obviously, nearby was code for 300 miles away in our company. Anyway, I was not to complain. It was good money and it put food on the table.
I had been travelling for about an hour when I noticed something. My tax disc was out of date by one day.
"I thought she'd bought a new one" I muttered to myself.
Now I was stuck in a difficult situation. Do I turn around, go back to the office to declare that my tax disc is out of date, and not be able to deliver the insurance papers? Or do I continue, following the instruction that I had been given and run the risk of having the police stop me for my out of date disk?
I decided to carry on, run the risk and chance it just to put food on the table so my wife would be happy. She meant the world to me, and I did not want to lose her over a simple flaw within the car.
A few miles later. Big mistake.
I could hear the noise of sirens. Damn.
