The biggest mistake that I made when learning to drive was to ask my wife for instruction. The second biggest mistake was to take instruction from any friend or family member willing to risk life and limb by accompanying me. The thought of paying for instruction never entered my head. Consequently after failing my driving test twice I decided that drastic action was needed and after going to my favourite search engine and keying in "driving school uk" I was presented with a comprehensive list of driving schools along with the types of motor vehicles that they provided instruction for.

Determined to do my homework thoroughly and not suffer the ignominy of failing for a third time, I took the extra precaution of consulting the dsa website. I found the dsa site to contain very comprehensive details of everything needed to pass a motor vehicle driving test including the facility to book online the theory and practical tests.

Feeling much more confident I enrolled with a reputable driving school and purchased one of their handbooks containing all the official dsa theory test questions and answers.

After about 10 lessons, my instructor told me that I was ready to take both the theory and practical tests. The thought of a third failure haunted me so I needed no incentives to thoroughly revise for the written test which I burnt much midnight oil revising for including the dsa mock theory test. Being well prepared I passed the motor vehicle theory exam and my confidence received a very welcome boost.

The day of my practical test arrived or I should say my third practical test. I must confess despite all my preparation I was still a bit nervous. However I willed myself to focus and this time the test went absolutely smoothly and I passed. Relief beyond belief.

The moral of this story is do not take lessons from unqualified family members or friends. You will pick up a few of their bad driving habits as well as picking up a few of your own which they may not notice or regard as being unimportant. Put yourself in the capable hands of a registered instructor from a reputable driving school from the start of your driving apprenticeship days and you will take a much shorter time to pass your test than I did.
