Lionel had read somewhere that being made redundant opened up new opportunities. He had spent 10 dreary, soul destroying years behind a desk in what he thought was a safe job. He now realised to his cost that there was no such thing as a safe job. The thought of searching for another office job that promised nothing but low paid drudgery just did not bear thinking about. He needed a complete change of direction and then, as if fate was taking a hand, his eyes alighted on the lorries parked in the distribution depot opposite the Job Centre. Soon they would be heading to all parts of the UK and beyond he thought wistfully.

The seed of an idea had been planted in his mind however, and on arriving home, he decided to search the Internet for providers of hgv driver instruction. He started by searching on driving schools uk and then by looking at the local ones in detail to see whether or not they provided this kind of driving instruction.

He was aware of his spirits lifting and a rising sense of excitement and instinctively knew that he had chosen the right career option. His one nagging doubt was whether he would be safe behind the wheel of one of these monster lorries or a danger to himself and other road users? This made him realise that he had to do his homework thoroughly before deciding where to go for his hgv driver instruction.

Six months later he was on his way to France with his first consignment. He felt free as he drove onto the motorway and headed for the coast. His self esteem had returned and his former office was a distant memory. As he approached the coast he saw the sign for the cafe recommended by his colleagues. Feeling, that it was time for a sustaining breakfast, he decided to give it a try. He was careful about his eating habits and his fitness regime as he had an annual medical that was a condition of his employment so he kept his consumption of full British breakfasts down to the absolute minimum.

On entering the cafe he saw a sad and dejected figure clearing the tables. It was none other than his former boss who had recommended him for redundancy. "There is no such thing as a safe job," he thought and was glad that he had decided to on acquiring his qualification as an hgv driver for added security, enjoyment and peace of mind.
